I'm afraid we have a real race on our hands. Everyone in the Obama camp (and the U.S. media) was feeling pretty cocky right after the Democratic National Convention. It didn't last very long.
McCain really pulled a fast one on us with this conservative lady governor. Everyone's first reaction was, "What an idiot McCain is! Does he think we're stupid"? Then she got up to speak. And the chick can speak.
The media instantly piled on trying to bring up any dirt they could - and there is some dirt - but everything they said only hurt Obama more. Sarah Palin is a tough one to beat up on. The Obama-supporting media actually called her a bad mother because she has a job! Now that's a tough sell - and a very hypocritical position for the Democrats to take. They have to be very careful here or it will continue to jump up and bite them in the ass.
I do know one thing though. Europe (and the American Left) is going to hate this lady. She possesses a boatload of the "typical" American stereotypes that Europe hates. Like:
1) Conservative Politically
2) Religious (Christian, of course. The religion they can't stand the most)
3) Goes Hunting!
4) Comes from a small town
5) Only been out of the US one time.
6) Is against abortion
7) Has a bunch of kids
8) Chose to have a Down's Syndrome child instead of aborting.
I know she will be dismissed as a conservative religious fanatic by most Europeans. The same is happening in the U.S. media. But, she's different. She's a mother, not rich, not male, not Washington. She may be more religious than you or me, but she is more "real" than all of those other politicians. People tend to identify with that. Can she "Be the leader of the free world" as they say? Is she qualified? Who knows? But who the hell is!
This is going to be very interesting. The Obama camp is praying (yes, they are praying now) that she will just make a massive mistake. We'll see. If she puts McCain in the white House many people are going to be in total shock - in the U.S. and in Europe. And boy will they be pissed!

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Palin:
My initial reaction to the news of the Republican VP choice:
Day 1: "Meh, who cares? Sounds like some loser-nobody. Sounds like the RhINO bastard is just trying to stir things up again."
Day 2: "Man the people on the internet sure seem to have it out for this woman. Maybe there is something wrong with her?"
Day 3: "Holy sh*t, these people on the internet REALLY have it out for her! I thought she was a nobody."
Day 4: "Did my wife's girlfriend really just say that Palin should "focus on her family" and not accept so much responsibility? Isn't this the same friend who told my wife that it is her responsibility to break with the Machista Spanish traditions and get a job, stop ironing my clothes, etc? Holy double standard Batman!"
Day 5: "Man the U.S. press sure seems to think that this lady is some kind of a big deal. Maybe I was wrong about her."
Day 6: "The European press HATES her, too?!?
MAN, I THINK I'M IN LOVE WITH HER!"
Day 7: "I rested. No more politics, please."
Just think of all the great arguments you are going to have with Spaniards if she is elected. What fun!
Surrealism is alive and well - who knew that John McCain could/would do such a thing?
I sure didn't.
Carl, Carl, eres un provocador...you already know my opinion, but anyway, here it goes:
I don't hate her, but I do believe she's extremely, and I mean extremely, dangerous. The first step towards "populismo" in the USA. Please be careful with this kind of people and their "natural charms" and "bonhomie". She reminds me a lot of Esperanza Aguirre. Enough said.
Eso si, está bastante buena, I'm sorry, I mean, errr, she's an attractive woman. I like that dominatrix look, I can't help it.
I like McCain however, he seems to be decent guy.
Roberto, Let's not start talking about which female politicians are hot. I don't want to be called desperate again.
I'm not saying I like, or agree, with her, I'm just saying Europe's going to hate her. They are going to dismiss her because she is small-town, conservative, and a Christian. They won't see anything else.
But why is she extremely dangerous? We have had conservative Republican Presidents (and Vice Presidents) before. Remember, we do have a congress to check the President's power. She cannot turn into right-wing Hugo Chavez.
And yes, McCain is alright. I think both Obama and McCain are OK actually. Don't worry too much. At least George is leaving...
I only hope that Europe has to hate her until the elections and that she goes back to being a nitwit gov of a hick state. If Obama and Biden win, it will be great having two intelligent adults in the White House instead of Darth Vader and the retard we have now. Obama actually speaks in full sentences...with punctuation and everything!
Read this piece by James Fallows for a great reason not to like this woman, at least not as vice president.
Well Leftbanker, As you know, in our political system being a rocket scientist is not a prerequisite for the job of President or Vice President.
The people will decide based upon the usual tidbits of information, first impressions, and emotions - and based on the usual ideology, Left vs. Right, Dems. vs. Repubs., etc.
We survived Dan Quayle.
Hi, I am a Spaniard-by-birth and US Citizen and I really like your blog, it is soooo real.
I hope McCain is elected, just to piss off all the people in Europe.
leftbanker,
thanks for the reference to james fallows. it is to the point.
well carl, you were wondering why there weren't any good looking women in politics in usa. there you go!
Well, we are going to see if she can hack it on Thursday (the debate). The word on the street is she's doing a lot of repeating herself.
To the Spaniards who want to see McCain win, my question is this: "Why do you hate the U.S. so much that you'd want to have another four years of Bush rule?" Because that's what you'll be getting. Yeah, Obama is no great shakes but McCain ain't fit to be president. There's something not right about that old timer. He's seething with rage and looks like he might pop at any moment. Weird how he doesn't want anyone looking at his medical records. What's he hiding?
Yes, the American Empire is in decline but the Spanish Empire ain't coming back. China and India are up next. Will be fun to see Europe wish for "los aquellos tiempos" when their biggest complaint was whining about its biggest ally, nasty old Uncle Sam bigfooting the globe. Hey, Europe, can we have our U.S. military forces back? Thanks.
If you thought U.S. style imperalism was perilous and hubristic, just wait 'til you get a load of Global Domination-Chinese Style. The Chinese are going to make the U.S. look like rank amateurs when it comes to geopolitics.
Bilingual, You really said it. We could save a lot of money without our military in Europe (maybe enough for some healthcare).
What about Russia? The EU is going to have a great time giving in to whatever Putin wants when we're not top dogs anymore.
Aw, gosh darn it, we've got Sarah Palin waiting in the wings, ready to unbutton her top and bat her eyelashes at Putin when he "rears his head" over Europe and the U.S.
